The World is Our Classroom!

Kaylee loves the beach!
This summer, it was not within our budget to go on a family vacation. But, thanks to our friends in Virginia Beach we did get to go to Virginia Beach! We went for two night in July for our anniversary and we went for a few days the second week in September.

There are many possibilities for learning experiences at the beach! For example, we brought along a guide to help us identify the different birds, crabs, and shells we saw on the beach. We also observed a group of dolphins and discussed them. We rode bike. We dug in the sand. We discussed how waves are formed. She experienced the oceans tides. She swam. She flew a kite on the beach. Those kinds of things are teaching Kaylee about her environment. There isn't a better way to learn than experiencing those things as they are happening. The world is our classroom. We love homeschooling. The possibilities are endless...

The Summer of the Cucumber

Around our house we are calling this summer, "The Summer of the Cucumber." Cucumbers are one of Kaylee's favorite vegetables. In previous years, we have had difficulty growing cucumbers for various reasons. I have learned to plant extra plants so we can still have cucumbers even if we lose a few plants. In the spring, I planted 4 plants in our Earthboxes on our deck and 4 plants in our new raised garden bed. I figured I would lose a few plants. Boy, was I wrong! Not only did our plants thrive, but we have had an overabundance of cucumbers!

In order to preserve some cucumbers we decided to try pickling them. The first batch I made refrigerator pickles. Refrigerator pickles do not require any canning. You simply boil the brine solution, pour it into jars filled with cut up cucumbers, and refrigerate. Then, wait a few days and eat them.

A few days later, we had a lot more cucumbers. I decided to actually can these cucumbers to eat later this year. I have only canned once before. I researched how to can pickled cucumbers and the homeschool lesson began.

Kaylee loves to help. I sliced up the pickles and she helped by stuffing them into the jars. She watched each step of the process and was quite excited to learn a new skill!

Pupcake

Sometimes Kaylee gets an idea and there is no stopping her. It's usually best to just let her create whatever it is that she must do and then continue with normal life.

She was reading a Strawberry Shortcake book the other day. In the back of the book there are some recipes. It was a recipe to create Pupcake, Strawberry Shortcakes dog, and his dog house. She had to follow the recipe at that moment. One of the many benefits of homeschooling. Who am I to argue with my creative girl?

Total concentration on the task.

She spent a lot of time on her project and then ate the results. After a few pictures, of course...

The finished project.

The Tooth Fairy Visits (twice!)

Initially, the first adult tooth worried me. It started to come in behind the baby tooth. I had never seen anything like it before. I was reassured by a friend that it was normal. I googled it just to be sure. According to google, it is common. It made me feel a bit better, but I kept checking it multiple times per day. Yeah, it freaked me out.

A few days after the adult tooth emerged the baby tooth in front of it began to wiggle. It wiggled for days. It got so wiggly that Kaylee refused to eat. We went to Arby's one night to get some curly fries. She can't resist fries. As she was eating, the tooth finally popped out. Whew! Kaylee lost her first tooth on July 18, 2013.

The tooth fairy left Kaylee a note and gave her $5 for her first tooth. $1 each additional tooth.

The second tooth was the same story. The adult tooth began to emerge behind the baby tooth. I wasn't as worried this time. This one tooth even longer to come out. Kaylee was very gentle with it. It hung in there by just a little string. It was flopping all around. Laying on its side. And generally just being unsettling. She was playing in her playroom and it literally just fell out of her mouth!

Tooth number 2!
